The Cultural Subversive Art

of Edward M Corpus

Hello. Thank you so much for visiting. I’m an artist and writer based in the city of Pacific Grove, off the beautiful Monterey Bay on the scenic central coast of California.

Using visual media ranging from traditional to digital to comic art and text, I create provocative works that reflect my values of social justice and inclusion.

Following in the ancient tradition of the artist as a healer and guardian of the tribal community, I write and create images to subvert the dominant culture of inequality, and contribute to effect lasting social transformation.

Please click on the images below to visit the portfolio galleries of my visual art works. Work that I can’t quite fit in these themes might show up in my blog posts. I invite you to read my blog, purchase art and leave your comments, too.

“Art should comfort the disturbed
and disturb the comfortable.”

— Cesar A. Cruz, poet, activist, educator

You need not “be an artist” or “understand art” to sign up. This newsletter and blog is for you. The enjoyment of art should be accessible to everyone, not only to some snobby elite.

Why? My belief is that simply by virtue of being human you were born a creative — “born an artist”, whether visually, in music, literature, movement, woodworking. . . whatever. What happened between then and now to change that? Perhaps your parents convinced you that being creative wasn’t “practical”. Perhaps you learned it while being subject to WMIs –the weapons of mass instruction.

I make art to reclaim the human creative spirit – yours and mine – and to subvert the banality of popular culture.

Why is culture important to you? Culture is the “operating system” of a society. The most important ideas — good ones AND bad ones — are transmitted through culture. Right now there are a lot of bad ideas going around. The dominant culture of patriarchy and of “compete, dominate and win at all costs”, has been around a long while and is long due for retirement.

One hardly needs to look further than the state of current American politics to witness soul-killing bad ideas.

True creative activity allows people to see reality in combinations and configurations they might not have before. So, find out how I propose that we — you and I — change the culture with the help of art — because in this sad world, we need creatives now more than ever.

Besides keeping up-to-date on where my artwork will be and when – exhibits, studio tours and such – you might like to be “in” on the subversive action.

Want a peek in on how creatives think, and behind-the-scenes views of how art is created step-by-step? How about joining in on my rants on how creative activity can nourish and restore the crippling damage done to children by faulty parenting and educational styles? Just honest, raw, intelligent and opinionated, with respectful give-and-take dialogue.

Thank you in advance for subscribing to my newsletter and blog.

The Art of Cultural Subversion
Appeared at The Dalí Expo

The Dalí Expo (now the Monterey History & Art Association: Salvador Dalí) featured my work as the rotating solo artist during November 2019, including my painting King Sisyphus In The Underworld, as it did Karen’s in August 2019.

KRONOS, a fun interactive piece of installation art,  is the result of artist Karen Warwick’s creative vision and my collaboration. It was the centerpiece of her solo exhibition Time Flies in August 2019 — and continued to be accessible to the public in The Dalí Expo lobby for five-and-a-half months through January 13, 2020.

Original Art and Prints Are Available for Purchase.

Donations of Any Amount Are Also Welcome and Appreciated.

I appreciate your support of my work in reading my blog, signing up for the newsletter, purchasing my art — or all of the above.

Safely and securely purchase prints or signed originals online. Contact me by message directly or call me.
